🚨 Penn alum arrested in CEO killing
December 10, 2024 · — Ava Wojnowski
It’s Tuesday, Philly. And that means you can get a cup of coffee at FedNuts for just a buck. All you have to do is flash your SEPTA Key card. We have that and several of the hundreds of other discounts (including at Citizens Bank Park!) that you can get with your Key card. That’s all in today’s pod:

What's CITY Talking About?
🚨 Suspected CEO Killer is a Penn Alumnus
The man named by police as a “person of interest” in the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO is Luigi Mangione, 26, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, Mangione founded a game development club, majored in computer and information science, was inducted into an honor society for engineering, and returned for a master’s degree. ⚖️ MOVE Bombing Victim's Family Demands Action
In the wake of Penn Museum's acknowledgement that it's in possession of human remains from the 1985 MOVE bombing, the family of Delisha Africa, who was 12 at the time she was killed, are demanding that the museum turn over any remains it still has. [CBS]
⛺ Encampment To Be Cleared … but When?
People living in an encampment by the Walmart along the Delaware River are preparing to get kicked out, but they don’t know when. One of the concerns is the stability of the abandoned piers where many of the unhoused people live. [🔒The Inquirer]
🏛️ Looking for Prime Real Estate in Center City?
Nine buildings that were part of the suddenly shuttered University of the Arts are for sale on and around South Broad Street. These buildings include offices, apartments, and Hamilton Hall, and can be purchased individually or in bulk. Maybe a Sixers arena can go here?! We kid. [Axios]
🦅 Barkley Breakin’ Records
Running back Saquon Barkley set the Eagles’ single-season rushing record during Sunday’s playoff-clinching win. Barkley broke the previous record set by LeSean McCoy. MVP! MVP! MVP! [NFL]

Embrace the Cold With These Philly Winter Activities

Winter can feel long and endless, but in Philly we know how to make the most of the chilly season. So grab your sleds and skates, and get ready to enjoy what will (hopefully) be a snowy season in Philly.
🛷 Sledding Through Philly
Clark Park in West Philly, with its giant bowl-like center, has plenty of space to set off on a sled and crash into your friends at the bottom. Over at the Art Museum, sledding down the steps is a Philly winter right of passage. The steps at the back of the museum are great, too, and for more traditional action head across the street to the hill next to the playground at 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Further north is Lemon Hill in East Fairmount Park, and over in Southwest Philly Bartram’s Garden is a beautiful place to rip some hills on your sled.
🥾 Take a Hike
Maybe you’re in need of a scenic winter hike. Pennypack Park is the spot to go with well-kept trails, making it easy to get outside even when it’s cold and snowy. If you’re willing to venture out of the city, with over 2,600 acres and rushing waterfalls Ridley Creek State Park is an ideal spot for a winter trek. There's little tree cover at John Heinz Wildlife Refuge, so you can find some sun for a short winter walk along the marshland and amidst birds that don’t seem to fly anywhere else in Philly.
🏂 Stoked on the Slopes
Calling all skiing and snowboarding junkies … some wonderful hills are waiting to be carved up. While Philly itself doesn’t have ski resorts, you’re less than 90 minutes away from Bear Creek Mountain Resort, which is essentially a miniature resort with a hotel, restaurants, bar, and epic tubing hill. Newbies should try Spring Mountain Adventures, just about 35 miles outside of Philly in Montgomery County.
