☃️ Surprise snow day extends kids' winter break
January 6, 2025 · — Ava Wojnowski
Happy Snow Day, Philly ❄️ Or unhappy, if your schedule is all messed up because schools are closed and your kids are home for the whopping 17th day in a row. Longest winter break ever for the city's 200,000 students? Courts and government offices are also closed today. So here are some ideas on where to go sledding.
Today’s podcast follows the story of Carlesha Gaither Freeland, a woman who was abducted off a street in Germantown in 2014 and held against her will for three days. City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri speaks with Claudia Vargas, investigative reporter at NBC10, about her new true-crime documentary, “Finding Carlesha.”

What's CITY Talking About?

🪪 Is Your SEPTA Card Faulty?
Around 100,000 SEPTA cards were mistakenly encoded with the incorrect expiration date, causing many to stop working. The worst part? There’s no way to tell if your SEPTA card is faulty unless you try to use it at a SEPTA station. SEPTA Key cards and contactless payments are not impacted by this error. 📝 Volunteers Needed to Count Philly’s Homeless Population
The Point-In-Time count is an annual survey of Philly’s homeless population. The Office of Homeless Services is looking for volunteers to assist with this count on Jan. 22. Volunteers will work in groups across the city. If you’re interested, today is the final day to sign up. [Philly Tribune, City of Philadelphia]
🚨 Cops Will Stop Locking Up Juveniles for Low-Level Offenses
Starting today, Philadelphia Police will no longer arrest juveniles for lower-level crimes and will instead send them to youth diversion programs. The relevant offenses include disorderly conduct, theft, and vandalism. This change is driven by a concern that these kids are ending up in juvenile detention instead of getting the resources that they need. [CBS, Philly DA]
😬 Eskin’s Embarrassing Exit
Howard Eskin, long-time sports radio host at 94.1 WIP, has been kicked off the air for good because he allegedly shouted at a female employee during a remote broadcast at Chickie’s & Pete’s. This incident comes five months after the Phillies banned him from Citizens Bank Park because he gave an Aramark employee an “unwanted kiss.” [🔒 The Inquirer]
