🗣️ Philly protests to counter Trump inauguration

January 17, 2025 · — Ava Wojnowski

Hey Philly! I have a bit of a sappy intro for you today. This is my last newsletter with City Cast Philly for a while. I’ve absolutely loved having the opportunity to be your interim newsletter editor and having the opportunity to write about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection 🫶

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Hey Philly will now be written and run by Siani Colón. She’s Philly-born and bred and knows the city well enough to know the difference between Frank Rizzo and Dirty Franks. Having worked for outlets like Kensington Voice and Resolve Philly, she’s excited to continue writing about the city she loves. Thanks, Philly … it’s been a pleasure!

P.S. 📝 We won’t have a newsletter on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. See you again on Tuesday!

What's CITY Talking About?

📘 The Eagles Have Made This Author Phamous

Keep an eagle eye out for this face at the Linc on Sunday: Jim Murphy. His book was made a best-seller by A.J. Brown flipping through it during the Packers game, and now he'll attend the playoff game against the Rams. On today’s Friday News Round Up, City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri reads an excerpt from Murphy's “Inner Excellence” – plus, the team discusses the new candidate for district attorney, reactions to the Sixers arena switcheroo, and how Starbucks won’t let us pee for free (again).

🚌 Germantown’s Having Another Revolution

After years of delays, surveys, and meetings, SEPTA’s Bus Revolution is finally here. It feels like we’ve been talking about this since the Battle of Germantown in 1777. The transit authority’s reconfiguration of its bus network will begin next month in the northwest section of the city with the renaming of bus lines, route changes, and increased frequency. 🏛️ Bidding Wars Continue For UArts Properties

The Curtis Institute of Music outbid Temple University to buy the Art Alliance Building on Rittenhouse Square, owned by the out-of-business University of the Arts, for $7.6 million. Curtis President Robert Díaz said the institute’s current facilities are at “maximum capacity.” Temple did land the UArts’ Terra Hall property for its new Center City campus. [WHYY]

📣 Marches and Music To Take Over Center City

Local groups have planned several actions in Center City ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday. Actions include a free concert organized by HIAS Philadelphia with performances from immigrant and refugee musicians and protests outside City Hall focused on civil, immigrant, and reproductive rights.
