What's CITY Talking About?
🏘️ Philly Rent Affordable to Everyone but Philadelphians
While your friends from New York may say rent in Philly is cheap compared to back home, it isn’t exactly affordable. Incomes of local renters haven’t grown with rising housing costs and the Philly metro area is now ranked the ninth least affordable out of 44 metro areas in the U.S. [🔒 The Inquirer]
- On today’s podcast, we replay a conversation with realtor Justin Forte on how to find the best places to rent in the city and how to protect your wallet during the housing search. Plus, Trenae relives Sunday’s Eagles win with scenes from the Linc and the streets.

🚘 Need for Less Speed
If you’re not already slowing down on these Philly streets, you might want to before you get yourself a ticket. Mayor Parker signed a bill approving the installation of speed cameras along State Route 13, which runs along Frankford and Baltimore Avenues. [NBC10]
🏆 Knucklemania Crowns New Champion in Philly
Football isn’t the only thing taking over South Philly. The Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship recently stopped by Philly for its fifth Knucklemania. Bare fists (and cannolis?) flew but not everyone can be crowned champ. Congrats to BKFC’s new heavyweight champion, Ben Rothwell. [Philly Sports Network]
- New to BKFC? We have you covered with a rundown on how it came to be and the former Philly boxer who’s turned the sport into a global empire. [🎧 City Cast Philly]
🏈 Could B.G. Return for Super Bowl LIX?
It’s not over until we say it’s over. After a torn triceps in Week 12 left Eagles defensive back Brandon Graham out for the rest of what is thought to be his last season, we’re now learning he might be taking the field one more time. In an interview, Graham hinted that if all goes well, he could make an appearance in time for the Super Bowl. [CBS Sports]

Where to Celebrate Lunar New Year in Philly

While those of us using the Gregorian calendar are about to complete the first month of the new year, Jan. 29 will mark a fresh start for cultures around the world that celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Traditions vary across cultures, but the celebrations begin with the first new moon on the lunar calendar. This Lunar New Year will be represented by the snake, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, and the element wood.
As we slither into the new year, here’s how you can celebrate the Year of the Wood Snake in Philly.
Jan. 28
No celebration is complete without a parade. Kick the party off with Chinatown’s Lunar New Year Midnight Parade at 10th and Spring Streets. Expect dancing, drumming, and fireworks. Not able to make it out that late? There will be a daytime parade on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.
Jan. 31
Journey To The West’s Year of the Snake celebration is about getting lit for a good cause. Wear your best to Blind Barber for a night filled with DJs, a photobooth, drag performances, and cocktails. The 21+ event will be from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the Asian Mosaic Fund, which supports programming for the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
Feb. 1
If you’re already stopping at Reading Terminal Market for a bite to eat, don’t miss a lion dance performance from the Philadelphia Suns at 11 a.m.
Friends of the Rail Park will have a free event along the elevated former rail viaduct. Attendees can expect live dance and music performances, a flower market, and – if you’re feeling hungry – a bao bar from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
