What's CITY Talking About?

❤️‍🩹 Northeast Philly Comes Together at Emotional Town Hall

More than 100 community members attended a town hall at Solis-Cohen Elementary School, seeking solace and answers after last Friday’s medical jet crash. Attendees shared anecdotes of pulling people out of burning cars, fleeing homes, and awaiting updates on hospitalized family members. While some parts of the neighborhood returned to business as usual, the city outlined resources for residents still in need of support and launched a fund to collect donations for survivors. 🛒 Amazon Pumps Brakes on Whole Foods Unionization

Center City Whole Foods employees celebrated victory and history last month as the first Whole Foods in the country to unionize, but Amazon now wants the National Labor Relations Board to ignore the vote. The company, which owns Whole Foods, claimed in a lawsuit that The United Food and Commercial Workers Union intimidated employees who supported the grocer and promised a wage increase for those who came to vote. The union calls the accusations “baseless.” [WHYY]

📝 Processing Gun Violence Through Poetry

“Healing Verse Germantown: The Streets Are Talking” is an initiative helping Germantown neighbors process the impacts of gun violence and express themselves through art. Philadelphia poet laureates Trapeta B. Mason and Yolanda Wisher organized the project into three parts: poetry workshops, a poetry “hotline” that people can call to hear the poems created in the workshops, and finally a public art installation incorporating the poems.
