⚖️ Philly Jail Population Lowest in a Decade

The city’s jail population is at its lowest since 2015, with fewer than 3,700 in custody this week. The drop is attributed to emergency bail hearings, quicker trials for low-level misdemeanors, and plunging gun violence numbers. [🔒The Inquirer]

While homicides and shootings may be experiencing a downward trend, the number of Philly youth charged for gun crimes is strikingly high. Last year, 26 teens were charged with homicide and 49 for nonfatal shootings, with officials saying these crimes are often celebrated online by the perpetrators. Advocates and youth say the violence stems from a general lack of opportunities, peer pressure, and the omnipresence of bloodshed in media. [The Trace]

☀️ Philly School District Increases Free Summer Programming

Despite the risk of federal funding cuts, the School District of Philadelphia isn’t slowing down its summer programming. In fact, it’s expanding. When school’s out in June, 25,000 students have the chance to learn trade skills, play a musical instrument, attend a summer camp, or hit the books. [Chalkbeat]
