🏈 Hey NFL, kiss our tush
May 22, 2025 · — Siani Colón
Good morning, Philly! Now that almost all of Tuesday’s ballots have been counted, you can check out the results. While fewer people voted than four years ago, the results are similar. With 99% of divisions reporting, incumbent District Attorney Larry Krasner won the Democratic primary with 63.86% of the vote over Pat Dugan’s 35.99% Back in 2021 in his primary against Carlos Vega, Krasner won with 66.79%. Most of the election wards in the Northeast and two in deep South Philly backed Dugan this year, while the rest of the city supported Krasner.

What's CITY Talking About?
🎙️ Why Aren’t There More Black Sports Radio Hosts in Philly?
Sports talk radio has a prominent place in our media ecosystem here in Philly. But City Cast Philly contributor O.J. Spivey recently noted that there aren’t any Black full-time hosts in Philly who aren’t former athletes. Why? He talks to host Trenae Nuri about how diversity shapes our understanding of the game. So, naturally, the Eagles celebrated by uploading 26 minutes of the play immediately after the news dropped. See you in Week 10, Packers. [ESPN]

🫏 State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta at Risk of Losing DNC Position
The Democratic National Committee voided the results of its election for vice chair after a supposed procedural error, and will reselect officials. That means Philadelphian and Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta could lose his position. Kenyatta had received the most votes out of all the candidates and says he doesn’t want to participate in “Democrat vs. Democrat nonsense.” [Philadelphia Gay News]
💡 The Electricity Is Too Damn High
Increased demand, wire upgrades, and changing fuel costs are among the reasons electricity costs in Pennsylvania have risen and are expected to continue increasing. PECO customers using 700 kilowatt hours paid $13.58 more every month, and that's likely to spike another $2.70 each month next year. [The Conversation]

Your May 2025 Guide to New Restaurants, Bars & Cafés in Philly

Philadelphia has one of the hottest food scenes in the country — just ask Bon Appétit, which included not one but two Philly restaurants (Meetinghouse and My Loup) in its top 20 new restaurants of the year.
Since our culinary landscape is constantly growing and changing, we’re here to help you stay on top of it all. Here’s a recap of some of the Philly restaurants, bars, cafés, and other food spots that have recently opened.
🍜 Kyuramen | 44 N. 12th St. (Center City)
Japanese chain Kyuramen has made its way to Philadelphia, serving up dishes like Tokyo tonkotsu shoyu ramen and pork tonkatsu omurice. If you don’t eat meat, Kyuramen debuted its first-ever vegan dishes. Enjoy a vegetable miso vegan ramen or pan-fried vegetable dumplings.
☕ Thundermug Cafe | 6940 Torresdale Ave. (Tacony)
Originally located in East Falls, Thundermug Cafe is expanding to Tacony. Fuel up in the morning with a vegetable quiche, apple crumb coffee cake, or even a cheesesteak handpie.
🍨 Malai Ice Cream | 260 S. 18th Street (Rittenhouse)
We have some great spots in the city to grab frozen treats, so of course we’re excited to see a new ice cream shop with a twist open in Philly. Malai Ice Cream uses South Asian ingredients to provide a spice-forward flavor with options like lemon cardamom, masala chai, and rose with cinnamon roasted almonds.
🐙 Ama | 101 W. Oxford St. (Fishtown)
Named after the informal way to say “mom” in Spanish, this live-fire Mexican restaurant is bringing flavor to Fishtown. Diners can expect wild mushroom tlayada, coal roasted octopus, shrimp ceviche tostada, and lamb birria. Bar seating is walk-in, but reservations are encouraged for the main dining room.
