What's CITY Talking About?

🍽️ Can’t Cut This Cooking Class
Federal funding cuts due to President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” are slashing programs in the Philly region, including SNAP-Education. Vetri Community Partnership is losing $700,000 in funding for its programs in schools, but it is still moving forward with its weekly free cooking classes. [🎧 City Cast Philly]

🗳️ We’ll Have a Competitive General Election After All
It seemed that Larry Krasner’s position as district attorney was locked in after a victory in the May primary, but it appears a rematch is underway. Defeated Democratic primary candidate Pat Dugan plans to challenge Krasner in the general election by running on the Republican ticket, despite previously stating he wouldn’t do such a thing. ⚖️ The Future of Frank Rizzo’s Statue (and Legacy)
After an appeals court ruled that former Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s replacement of Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day was invalid, it looks like Kenney opponents may score another win. The Frank L. Rizzo Monument Committee is expected to receive the statue of Rizzo, a controversial former mayor and police commissioner, sometime after Labor Day, with the city paying to repair damages. The statue was removed from outside the Municipal Services Building in 2020 during protests related to George Floyd’s murder after it was repeatedly vandalized. [🎧 City Cast Philly, Axios]
