Hey there, friend! City Cast editor Natalia Aldana back with you again while Siani takes some much-needed time off 🤗

SEPTA is on everyone’s minds these days. Here’s an interesting critique on the roles that Governor Shapiro and Mayor Parker have played (or not) in resolving the transportation crisis 👀

What's CITY Talking About?

The names of enslaved people who lived in the President's House are carved into a monument in Independence National Park on August 9, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Around a dozen different exhibits and displays in Independence National Historic Park are under review by the National Park Service for potential removal or editing on September 17. The initiative to eliminate materials deemed disparaging to the Founding Fathers or the legacy of the United States is part of an executive order issued by Donald Trump in March.

🖼️ Trump Could Remove These Exhibits

The Trump administration is reviewing Independence National Historic Park exhibits related to slavery, saying it will remove or alter content that “inappropriately disparages Americans.” This includes text at the President’s House exhibit that mentions President Washington’s role in transporting enslaved people and a review of “The Dirty Business of Slavery” panel that describes the forced breeding of enslaved people. ⚖️ Should ICE Agents Remove Masks?

Immigration advocates rallied outside of an ICE office last week to support a bill in the state legislature that would mandate law enforcement, specifically ICE agents, remove masks during operations. Proponents say this could increase transparency and accountability, while ICE defends masks as a tool “to keep themselves and their [families] safe.” [WHYY]

🚴 Judge Halts Bike-Friendly Loading Zones

A judge has ordered the city to stop creating loading zones to accommodate protected bike lanes on Pine and Spruce Streets in Center City. The intention behind the zones was to give cars and trucks places to stop without blocking bike lanes, but the judge ruled in favor of residents who sued. [The Inquirer 🔒]

  • While Center City residents argue that they have a right to load and unload in front of their homes, cyclists say clear and protected bike lanes save lives. [City Cast Philly 🎧]

🙂 The Unexpected Benefit of Philly’s Green Spaces

Philly has created hundreds of community gardens, allowing green spaces like Heroic Gardens in the Northeast to flourish. Our podcast host Trenae Nuri visited Collie Turner, the garden’s executive director, and Salome Hall, a Navy veteran and founder of Sisters Affirming Sisterhood Project, to talk about how being in nature helped them grow as people and give back to their communities.
