August 27, 2025 · — Siani Colón
Hiya, Philly! When I’m putting together this newsletter for you, I have to remind myself to take a snack break from time to time. And it looks like one PA chip brand has a new addition to its lineup. “Long Hots & Sharp Provolone” is the winner of Herr’s “Flavored By Philly: Crunch Off” contest.
Philly’s certainly flavorful, but are local food establishments getting enough support to serve residents and visitors alike? Keep reading for more.

What's CITY Talking About?
🕙 Do Business Curfews Actually Stop Crime?
In an attempt to curb late night crime, a new bill awaiting Mayor Parker’s signature would expand a business curfew to neighborhoods in North and Northwest Philly. But business owners are sounding the alarm, saying these curfews could cause an exodus of such establishments from these communities. [🎧 City Cast Philly]

🍽️ 2026 Can Put Philly’s Food Scene in the Limelight
Philly will be busy next year with the semiquincentennial, MLB All-Star Game, and FIFA World Cup. And with 6,500 businesses in the food industry here, breaking bread can connect us with our global guests. But the city needs to address broader operational challenges first. [Next City]
⚖️ Krasner Blasts Trump’s Attempt To End Cashless Bail
President Trump signed an executive order requiring the U.S. Attorney General investigate cities that eliminated cash bail and put them under review for potential termination of federal funds. Philly District Attorney Larry Krasner, who implemented a policy barring prosecutorial requests for bail on select misdemeanors and nonviolent felony charges, called the move “an authoritarian power grab.” [WHYY]
💰 Poverty’s Down in Philly, but Economic Mobility is Stagnant
Philly’s poverty rate is on a downward turn, but getting out of poverty is still a challenge. The city ranked dead last out of 50 metro areas in the United States for economic mobility, but other regions’ improvements are a sign that not all hope is lost for Philly. [Technical.ly]

💍 Congrats to Pennsylvania’s own Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce on their engagement! Travis may have missed out on getting another Super Bowl ring after we kicked the Chiefs’ butts last season, but he’s getting an arguably more meaningful ring. And remember: Their love story began on a podcast co-hosted by an Eagle.
