🏗️ University City’s “golden era” may be ending

We made it to the weekend! And good news: It’s a long one. No matter what your profession is, thank you for all the work you do and we hope you have a restful Labor Day!

More good news: Mayor Parker announced last night that the city is coming through with money to restore some SEPTA service to help students get to school. But the state budget impasse continues, and the rest of the money that SEPTA needs has yet to be approved.

🏫 School Safety Officers Still Pushing for a Better Contract

Philly school teachers voted to ratify their new contract last night, but another union is nowhere close to an agreement. School safety officers are demanding better pay, training, and uniforms, and also raising concerns about flawed weapons detection systems. [🎧 City Cast Philly]

🚰 Expect Higher Water Bills Starting Monday

A typical bill is going from $81 to $89 a month as the Philadelphia Water Department increases rates for the seventh year in a row. [KYW]

🚗 Uber To Offer Free Rides for Seniors

The Uber Senior Rides Program plans to partner with two Philadelphia nonprofits to coordinate rides for residents 60 and older to help meet needs like going to the grocery store and medical appointments. 📸 Speed Cameras Going Up on Broad Street

New automated cameras will catch speeders from Pattinson Avenue all the way up to Old York Road once cameras go live mid-September. Enforcement will begin in November, with fines of up to $150. [CBS Philly]

Penn’s senior executive vice president, Craig Carnaroli, is leaving for Stanford, but as he looks back at his time here, Carnaroli predicts we’ll be seeing more renovation and less construction in University City as land scarcity and uncertain federal funding slows expansion.
