🏗️ Taxpayer Money to Go Towards Governor Home Fortifications

Around $1 million of taxpayer money will be used for security updates at Gov. Shapiro’s private home following an arson attack at the official governor's mansion in April — no one was injured, but the fire caused severe damage to parts of the residence. The arsonist, Cody Balmer, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges earlier this month, and will spend 25 to 50 years in prison. [Spotlight PA]

🏡 The New Face of Philly Real Estate

Corporate investors purchased around a quarter of Philadelphia single-family homes between 2017 and 2022, mainly in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, according to a new study. The report also found that large investors are more likely to have properties with code violations and to push for evictions than smaller ones are, which some experts fear price out lower-income families and first-time home buyers.
