🏗️ Major redevelopment could come to Columbus Boulevard
December 18, 2025 · — Siani Colón
We’re so close to the holidays! Although I’m not traveling this year, that doesn’t mean I still can’t hang out at a hotel. Philly’s hotel bar scene promises an elevated experience. So whether you’re enjoying a staycation or need a place to ring in the new year with visiting friends, put down the baggage (literal or emotional) and grab a drink at these hotel bars.

What's CITY Talking About
Is There Lead in Your Pipes? Maybe
You may have gotten a letter stating you probably, not really, but maybe have lead in your pipes. That’s part of the Philadelphia Water Department’s efforts to assess how many service lines in the city have lead, a total that is still unknown, and keep Philadelphians in the loop. If the status of your pipes is unclear or if you do have lead pipes, you’re advised to run your faucets for a bit every morning. [Jeremy Konopka via TikTok, WHYY]
Peace Patrols Emphasize De-Escalation, Not Altercation, on SEPTA
SEPTA is partnering with Philly Truce, a local anti-violence group, to keep passengers safe. The patrol rides the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines during the evening in the hopes of spotting trouble and assisting individuals, avoiding the need for police intervention. [NBC10]
Local ERs Overwhelmed by Overdose Spike, Extreme Withdrawls
Medetomidine, a veterinary sedative, is replacing xylazine as the drug contaminating Philly’s fentanyl supply. Two hundred times more potent, the effects of withdrawal include elevated heart rates, high blood pressure, and unstoppable vomiting. A Temple Health doctor says the city’s I.C.U.s are “overwhelmed.” [🔒 The New York Times]
What’s New With the Riverview?
The sea of parking lots and shopping centers along Columbus Boulevard could soon be a thing of the past. The properties known as Riverview Plaza, between Washington Avenue and Reed Street next to I-95, are on the market, paving the way to reimagine more of the Delaware Riverfront. The sale does not include the site of the former Riverview movie theater, which has plans to return under a new name and ownership. [JackPhillyRE]

The Coziest Drinks To Keep You Warm This Philly Winter

Brrr! It’s chilly out there. While you can bundle up with a sweater or a blanket, a nice hot drink from these local establishments will warm up your bones and soothe your soul.
Chocolate
Once you’re done seeing the twinkling lights in Franklin Square, go down a few blocks to Mocha Melt Cafe and try its toasted marshmallow hot chocolate. The marshmallow foam is toasted to a light brown and topped with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle.
If you haven’t had Oaxacan hot chocolate, you’re missing out. Café y Chocolate serves the traditional chocolate drink with a taste of cinnamon. If you’re feeling hungry afterwards, there’s an excellent menu of Mexican cuisine, much of which can be made vegetarian or vegan.
The hot chocolate at the Italian Market’s Rim Café is its own experience. Brought to you by the owner of Philly Cannoli King, the hot chocolate is served with large roasted marshmallows (do not be alarmed by the propane torch). And of course, you must pair your drink with a cannoli.
Coffee
Herman’s Coffee in Pennsport has a winter warmers menu to help you defrost this season. If you’re someone who likes eggnog, there are a few takes on the classic Christmas drink, including the Eggnog Cappuccino. If you really want to lean into the holiday spirit, grab a Candy Cane Mocha with candy cane syrup, chocolate, espresso, and steamed milk.
Speaking of mint, Lucky Goat Coffee House in Brewerytown has a delightful seasonal menu featuring a White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha.
Knockbox Cafe’s seasonal syrups range of flavors can match your taste palate. Consider orange cardamom, pear allspice, or spicy mocha to add to your drink.
