March 9, 2026 · — Siani Colón

We've officially sprung forward (if you remembered to reset your clocks). Springtime is almost here, and City Cast Philly is entering this season of new beginnings with a fresh new look! We hope this makes your reading experience even better. Reach out if you spot any issues.

Now that the sun’s out for a bit longer, you have extra time to explore Philly’s neighborhoods. Some of these communities have some pretty unique names (Devil’s Pocket!). How did these neighborhoods get their names, and when (if ever) is the right time to change them?

Crime Sees Drop Under Parker Administration

Philly ended 2025 with record low crime rates, and that trend is continuing so far in 2026. It’s not happening out of nowhere, according to this analysis. Former UArts Student Opens Studio at School’s Reimagined Space

One of the Village of Industry & Art’s first tenants at the former University of the Arts building on Broad Street is the Stained Glass Project, a nonprofit teaching stained glassmaking to high school students. It actually operates out of the closed university’s old glass studio. And elsewhere at the restored space at the former Hamilton Hall is an exhibit by a UArts alum that depicts frustration over the university’s closure and the process of picking up the pieces after loss. City Council Wants to Settle the Windshield Barnacle Debate

Councilmember Cindy Bass's bill would regulate the use of the controversial parking enforcement device by requiring police to ticket vehicles before companies attach the barnacles. Community members in several neighborhoods who parked in private lots complained about paying hefty fines to remove the device, some of which were installed within minutes of parking. [KYW]
