This elegant bird has long legs, a curvy neck, and a razor-sharp beak. While flying, it curls its neck into a tight “s” shape and stretches its legs out past its tail. When hunting, great blue herons wade stealthily through shallow water, stalking prey and then quickly plunging down to capture it.

Great blue herons are known for being vocal during breeding season, which lasts until the end of May. If you’re on the lookout for these birds, you can listen to their calls and songs to better recognize them on your journey.
